About Dr. Joshua Ong

Dr. Joshua Ong is a resident physician at the University of Michigan with a lifelong passion for space medicine and protecting the health of individuals on Earth and in space. He has conducted biomedical research and science education that launched into space, received multiple NASA grants with his multidisciplinary teams amounting to $200,000+ in funding, co-designed/published on a NASA-funded head-mounted device for future spaceflight missions, published 80+ publications in top ophthalmology/space medicine peer-reviewed journals, and as Associate Editor, published the textbook “Spaceflight Associated Neuro-Ocular Syndrome” (ISBN: 9780323915243), the first textbook on this space-based pathology covering humanity’s understanding of one of the largest physiological barriers to the Mars Missions, a collaborative effort amongst leading experts at NASA and partnering institutions across the globe. On his longitudinal journey in protecting astronaut health for future space exploration, Joshua has gained unique insight from directly collaborating and publishing with the lead ophthalmologist who first studied/described this phenomenon over a decade ago. Joshua has co-authored over 20 presentations including at the International Astronautical Congress and has published multiple book chapters in space medicine including “An introduction to space medicine and the physiological effects of spaceflight on the human body”. His publications have been cited by numerous papers and media outlets, including the famous science education channel, SciShow. Dr. Joshua Ong placed 2nd place at the NASA HRP IWS conference for his scientific research in a visual countermeasure for macular-based disruptions during spaceflight and serves as a member of the NASA Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning Analysis Working Group. He served as team lead on a NASA-funded bioartificial muscle project that launched into space via Blue Origin Shepard rocket in 2019 to investigate the mechanotransduction pathway of microgravity-induced skeletal muscle atrophy observed in astronauts. With his multidisciplinary team, he has published machine learning/extended reality papers that work to address space health issues. He has published multiple peer-reviewed research papers on novel space medicine visual technologies to protect and uphold astronaut safety during prolonged spaceflight including “Head-Mounted Dynamic Visual Acuity for G-Transition Effects During Interplanetary Spaceflight: Technology Development and Results from an Early Validation Study” and “Head-mounted digital metamorphopsia suppression as a countermeasure for macular-related visual distortions for prolonged spaceflight missions and terrestrial health”. A lifelong passion is to translate cutting-edge, space medicine technology to address longstanding barriers to attenuate preventable but irreversible vision loss in marginalized communities; he has published this framework in Nature’s space journal npj Microgravity titled: “Terrestrial health applications of visual assessment technology and machine learning in spaceflight associated neuro-ocular syndrome”. With a goal to provide astronauts with most updated information about their health during deep-space exploration, Joshua recently published with his team discussing the challenges of developing artificial intelligence technology in space medicine in Science’s space journal, Space: Science & Technology. He is also involved with novel treatments for devastating ocular diseases, including working with industry and publishing a manuscript on novel episcleral brachytherapy for AMD patients with unmet needs despite gold standard treatment, as well as publishing global guidelines on an emerging laser therapy for vision-threatening diseases in Nature’s ophthalmology journal Eye as part of the Subthreshold Ophthalmic Laser Society Writing Committee.
